# Documents

Document mode lets you ask AI to generate written content — essays, reports, study guides, summaries — and edit the result in a full markdown editor. When you’re done, download it as a `.doc` file.

## Accessing Document Mode

1. Click **Document** from the welcome screen quick-actions, or
2. Click the **Document** option in the footer tools menu.
3. The interface splits — the chat input remains at the bottom, and the **document editor** opens in the right panel.

## How Document Mode Works

Document mode creates a separate conversation type focused on content generation:

1. Type a prompt describing the document you want — e.g. “Write a study guide on photosynthesis for a Year 10 student”
2. Send the message.
3. The AI generates the content in **markdown format**.
4. The result appears in the document editor on the right.
5. Edit the content directly in the editor, or send another message to refine it further.
6. Download the finished document when ready.

## The Document Editor

The editor is a full **MDX (markdown) editor** with formatting tools:

| Tool | Function |
| --- | --- |
| **Headings** | H1, H2, H3 for structure |
| **Bold / Italic** | Emphasis and importance |
| **Bullet & numbered lists** | Organised content |
| **Tables** | Structured data |
| **Code blocks** | Formatted code snippets |
| **Undo / Redo** | Step through edit history |

You can type and edit directly in the editor at any time — you’re not limited to AI-generated content.

## Refining with AI

After the initial generation, continue chatting to improve the document:

- “Add a section on the light-dependent reactions”
- “Make the introduction shorter”
- “Add a summary table at the end”
- “Rewrite the second paragraph in simpler language”

Each follow-up message updates the document in the editor.

## Downloading Your Document

1. Click the **Download** button in the document editor toolbar.
2. The document is exported as a `.doc` file.
3. Open it in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or any compatible editor.

> **Tip**
>
> Use Document mode for assignments, revision notes, or structured study material. Start with a broad prompt, then refine section by section with follow-up messages.

> **Note**
>
> Document conversations are stored separately from regular chats in your sidebar — look for entries marked as document sessions to find them again later.
