# Voice Assistant

The Voice Assistant lets you have a natural, real-time spoken conversation with Aide. Instead of typing, you speak — the AI listens, processes your speech, and responds with both voice and text.

## Accessing the Voice Assistant

1. Click the **microphone icon** in the input bar of the main chat interface.
2. Or navigate to `/voice` directly.
3. Allow microphone access when your browser prompts for permission.

## How It Works

The Voice Assistant uses **RTVI (Realtime Voice Interaction)** — a bidirectional audio pipeline that processes your speech and streams the AI’s response back in real time.

1. Click **Connect** or the microphone button to start a session.
2. Wait for the status to show **Ready** or **Connected**.
3. Speak your question or prompt clearly.
4. The AI processes your speech and responds — both spoken aloud and as text on screen.
5. Continue speaking to keep the conversation going.
6. Click **Disconnect** when you’re done.

## Status Indicators

| Status | Meaning |
| --- | --- |
| **Connecting** | Establishing the voice connection |
| **Connected** | Ready — you can start speaking |
| **Listening** | AI is capturing your speech |
| **Responding** | AI is generating and playing its response |
| **Disconnected** | Session ended |

## Tips for Best Results

- Speak at a **natural pace** — not too fast, not too slow
- Keep background noise to a minimum
- Wait for the AI to finish responding before speaking again
- Use a headset or headphones to prevent audio feedback

> **Tip**
>
> The voice assistant is great for hands-free use — ask questions while taking notes, reviewing material, or doing other tasks at the same time.

> **Caution**
>
> If the connection drops mid-session, click Disconnect and reconnect to start a fresh voice session. Conversation context from voice sessions is not automatically carried into text chat.
