# Quran Tab

The **Quran tab** is the first tab in a student’s Canvas detail view. It shows the complete list of Quranic surahs and lets you control which ones the student can read or recite, plus jump straight into Read, Recite, or Judge mode for any surah.

## Opening the Quran Tab

1. From the [Students List](https://ilmiya.com/docs/studio/canvas/students-list/), click a student.
2. The detail view opens on the **Quran** tab by default.

<a id="mode-buttons"></a>

## Mode Buttons

At the top of the Quran tab you’ll see three mode buttons that change what action runs when you click a surah:

| Mode | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| **Read mode** | Open the surah in the read template for grading |
| **Recite mode** | Open the surah in recite mode for pronunciation assessment |
| **Judge mode** | Open the surah in judge mode for live evaluation |

The selected mode determines which action runs when you click a surah row, and which access toggle column is shown.

<a id="search"></a>

## Search

Search the surah list by:

- Surah number (e.g. `1`, `36`, `114`)
- Transliterated name (e.g. “Al-Fatihah”, “Ya-Sin”)
- Translation meaning (e.g. “The Opener”)
- Revelation type (“Makki”, “Madani”)

<a id="list-vs-grid-view"></a>

## List vs Grid View

Toggle between layouts:

| View | Description |
| --- | --- |
| **List** | Detailed table with sortable columns |
| **Grid** | Card-based view showing the surah identifier, name, revelation place and access toggle |

<a id="list-view-columns"></a>

### List View Columns

| Column | Description |
| --- | --- |
| **Number** | The surah number (1–114) |
| **Name** | Transliterated surah name — click to open in the selected mode |
| **Revelation** | Revelation order |
| **Meaning** | Translated meaning of the surah name |
| **Place** | Makki or Madani |
| **Juz** | The juz the surah starts in |
| **Verses** | Total verse count |
| **Surah** | Surah identifier (e.g. `surah001`) |
| **Read Access / Recite Access** | Toggle to grant or restrict the student’s access — column label depends on the active mode |

Every column except the access toggle is sortable — click a column header to sort ascending or descending.

<a id="per-surah-access-control"></a>

## Per-Surah Access Control

The **Read Access** and **Recite Access** toggles let you control which surahs a specific student can access. Toggle the switch to grant or revoke access:

| Mode | Toggle column |
| --- | --- |
| **Read mode** | Shows **Read Access** toggles — controls whether the student can open the surah for reading |
| **Recite mode** | Shows **Recite Access** toggles — controls whether the student can record a recitation for the surah |
| **Judge mode** | No access toggle shown — judge mode is teacher-only |

When you toggle access:

1. The switch is disabled while the change saves, then shows the new state.
2. A toast notification confirms the change (e.g. “Read access granted for Surah 2”).
3. The student’s permission updates in the backend instantly — no save button needed.

> **Tip**
>
> Use access control to scaffold student progress — restrict access to advanced surahs until students have completed introductory ones. Per-student overrides take precedence over class-level defaults.

## Launching a Surah

Click a surah’s name (or its grid card) to jump straight into the selected mode for that student:

| Mode | Opens |
| --- | --- |
| **Read mode** | The reading template editor for that student and surah |
| **Recite mode** | The recite assessment view |
| **Judge mode** | The judge evaluation view |

These views let you grade, assess, or evaluate the student directly on the surah you selected.

> **Note**
>
> If access is revoked for a surah, the student will not see it in their Campus or Canvas view — they cannot bypass the restriction. The teacher’s Canvas view always shows the full surah list with toggles so you can re-grant access at any time.
